PRANA FIRE

AN INSTALLATION PROJECTION LOOP
AT CURRENTS NEW MEDIA FESTIVAL 2016

At the Santa Fe Railyard Arts District, a three week, all night projection on the exterior of the Violet Crown Cinema

Fires burn at the entrance of the main temple in Tiruvunamalai, India, during ‘Deepam’ a 2,500 year old festival worshiping light and fire as a representation of the Hindu god Shiva. Imagine the smells of the fire smoke, the offerings of camphor placed in the fire, and the dreamy scent of jasmine adorning the women‘s hair. As I have been exploring the elements through my work, I found it extraordinary to see a whole community bowing to the basic element of fire, in this modern day. Blessings are not only performed inside the temple; people bless themselves and make their prayers in the street, in public view. We often watch movies to escape our story and enter into someone else’s narrative. Projected on the wall of a movie theater, this place we escape the world, is a glimpse into another way of life, where people honor themselves and make offerings and prayers and connect to fire.

SADHANA + PRANA FIRE

SADHANA + PRANA FIRE

SADHANA WITH KATHE IZZO, THE LOVE ARTIST

At the installation, regular, morning sadhanas took place as the dawn transformed this alley of East Indian intervention amidst the train tracks of Santa Fe. Performance merges with life practice to meet at the fire; to awaken the senses and calm the mind in the midst of the 'real' and gritty life. India is this way naturally - everything, simultaneously, all at once kind of an experience.
